Think Tanks explore key issues from different perspectives to develop new ideas. The term originally comes from the battlefield terminology. During WW II, Allied generals would retreat to one of the tanks in order to develop strategy, uninterrupted by external influences and protected by the armour of the vehicle. The term has been used subsequently for gatherings of experts who provide advice and respective insight and wisdom on specific areas of their expertise. These events usually deal with a specific challenge, issue, or question to be examined from different angles, by a group of 12-20 participants who meet for a few days at Schloss Mittersill. Think Tanks are practically oriented and not limited to certain academic disciplines, but focused on a particular question that often requires a cross-disciplinary approach. This interdisciplinary approach, together with an open, "safe" atmosphere of thinking, questioning and debating together encourages fresh thinking, and ensures that eventual output will be peer-assessed. |
